I’ve always loved language and art, and a picture book is a wonderful blend of the two. So it’s great to be able to spend my time wrestling with words and pictures, trying to get the combination right and tell a story in the best way I can.

Brian Lies (rhymes with “cheese”) was born in Princeton, New Jersey and graduated from Brown University with a degree in British and American Literature.  He did postgraduate study at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where he began exhibiting his paintings and earning prizes for his work. He worked as an editorial illustrator for The Christian Science Monitor and Boston Globe before illustrating his first book for Houghton Mifflin in 1989. Since then, he has written and/or illustrated more than 30 books, including the New York Times bestselling bat books ( Bats at the Beach, Bats at the Library, Little Bat in Night School, etc.), which have been featured on NPR and “The Martha Stewart Show.” In 2019, The Rough Patch received a Caldecott Honor, a Massachusetts Book Award Honor, and a Crystal Kite award from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. His latest work is Wombat Said Come In, written by award-winning author Carmen Agra Deedy.
