As a child in the late 1800s, Horace Pippin had a passion for drawing: He loved the feel of the charcoal as it slid across the paper, bringing images to life. He drew for his sisters, classmates, and co-workers. Even during WWI, Horace filled his notebooks with sketches from the trenches—until he was shot. After returning home, he couldn’t lift his right arm or create any art. But with determination and practice, he slowly regained the use of his arm and began painting again. Soon, his work caught the attention of people, including the famous painter N.C. Wyeth, and before long, Horace’s paintings were being displayed in galleries and museums across the country.
